 With the New Year, people often make resolutions that are goal-oriented, such as losing weight or saving more. While goals are necessary, achieving them takes more than just setting targets. People need to create

An alarm may prompt them to go for a walk, take a meditation break, or take a virtual coffee break with a colleague. There’s a reason why animals, or domesticated animals in particular, are known as man’s best friend since the dawn of civilization. For example, dogs were the first animals to be domesticated by humans, with evidence of domesticated dogs dating back around 15,000 years ago. They were trained to perform specific activities that aid in increasing survival, and helped guard our homes against intruders or enemies in different forms. They were also trusty companions during hunting expeditions to track and find game, thus bringing home a bounty of meat to feast in the evenings.

In most modern societies today, pets bring a whole different multitude of benefits to humans, particularly in terms of companionship and emotional connection:

It’s no surprise then that pet ownership increased to 78% during the Covid pandemic, as people everywhere in the world were cooped up and had little chance to socialize with their loved ones except through online means. Getting a pet meant having another living being at home that can excite, delight, and accompany us with their lovable natures. What emotional connection we can’t find in humans, we can do so in pets as well.

Naturally, as technology advanced and the advent of games came about, the first virtual pet game surfaced in the form of Dogz from PF Developer Magic in the early 1990s. However, it only got popularized by Bandai Namco in 1996, who introduced and developed the Tamagotchi.

First released in Japan, it quickly became a worldwide phenomenon as it simulates the real-life experience of pet ownership. Playing Tamagotchi meant taking care of a digital creature — from feeding it, playing with it, to cleaning up its poo and curing its illnesses. While many similar games came after it, such as Giga Pet and Poo-chi, later ones sought to enhance the concept further to emulate the real-life experience of owning a pet as closely as possible. Here are some of the other more well-loved, popular virtual pet games of note:

Nintendogs is a virtual pet simulation video game developed and published by Nintendo for the Nintendo DS and Nintendo 3DS handheld gaming systems. The game was first released in 2005, and it has since been re-released in various forms, including Nintendogs + Cats, which was released in 2011. The game utilizes the Nintendo DS and 3DS’s built-in microphone and touch screen to allow players to interact with their virtual pet in a realistic way, such as by giving commands with their voice or petting their pet with the stylus.

Players can adopt one of several breeds of virtual puppies, then take care of them by feeding them, training them, and playing with them. The game also includes a variety of mini-games and activities that players can participate in with their virtual pet, such as obedience training, agility training and playing fetch. Players can also compete in virtual dog shows, trade items and interact with other players’ virtual pets via a wireless connection. Nintendogs also support the use of the Nintendo DS and 3DS’s built-in cameras to take pictures of the player and their virtual pet, which can then be used as in-game items or shared with friends.

Petz is a series of virtual pet simulation video games that were developed and published by Ubisoft. The first Petz game was released in 1995, and the series has since grown to include multiple games, including Petz, Babyz, Dogz, and Catz. Petz games are available on multiple platforms, such as PC, Nintendo DS, Nintendo 3DS and mobile devices. The games have been well received by critics, and the series has sold millions of copies worldwide.

In the Petz games, players can adopt, raise, and care for a virtual pet, such as a dog, cat, horse, or even a unicorn. Players can customize their pet’s appearance, name, and personality, and then take care of their virtual pet by feeding it, playing with it, and keeping it clean. The game also includes a variety of mini-games and activities that players can participate in with their pet, such as playing fetch or going on a walk.

Players can also interact with other players’ pets in the game, either through trading items or by competing in virtual pet shows.

Neopets is an online virtual pet game that was first launched in 1999. Players can create an account and adopt virtual pets known as Neopets, which they can then take care of, play games with, and interact with other players.

Each Neopet is a different species and has its own characteristics and abilities. Players can customize their Neopets’ appearance, name, and gender. They can also buy items, such as clothing and furniture, to decorate their Neopets’ virtual home. They can also participate in a variety of activities with their Neopets, such as playing games, exploring virtual worlds, and completing quests. Neopets also has a social aspect where players can interact with other players, join guilds, and participate in community events.

What’s unique about it is that there is also a virtual economy where players can earn virtual currency called Neopoints by playing games and completing tasks, which they can then use to buy items for their Neopets. Purchasable items can fluctuate in price depending on demand and supply, and players can also gamble in different evnets, or invest in stocks and items.

Translated as “gathering cats”, Neko Atsume is a virtual pet simulation game developed and published by Hit-Point for mobile devices in 2014. The game’s objective is to attract as many cats as possible and complete the cat book, which is a collection of all the cats that visit the player’s garden. Players can also purchase items like food and toys to decorate the garden and attract new cats to come, each with their own unique appearance and personality. Once the cats arrive in the garden, players can take pictures of them and collect information on each cat, such as their name, breed, and favorite food.

Neko Atsume is a simple and relaxing game with low-stress gameplay, it doesn’t require players to actively take care of the cats, unlike other virtual pet games. The game is known for its cute and whimsical art style, and has a massive fanbase that took to sharing their cat pictures on their social media accounts, with the help of the inbuilt social features in the game.

MetaPals — the next generation of virtual pets!

Overall, virtual pets have come a long way since the release of the Tamagotchi in 1996, and they continue to evolve with advancements in technology. All of them aim to do one thing: to provide us with a sense of responsibility and purpose, and give people something to focus on and take care of. This is especially apparent with the uptake in pet ownership mentioned above.

While Covid is slowly but surely diminishing in its spread, it’s no question that virtual reality is becoming our new reality today. Well, not to say that it’s replacing real life, but that the line between our offline and online worlds have become more blurred in recent years. Many workplaces are now embracing the work-from-home scheme, and we no longer blink an eye when our colleagues suggest a virtual call rather than a physical meeting, though we may all live in the same city.

The metaverse is also another separate phenomenon that started taking the world by storm 2 years ago, albeit arguably fraught with controversial opinion as to its purpose and function. That said, it remains a fact that most of the global population are uneducated on related topics such as 

web3, blockchain, cryptocurrency, decentralization, etc, all of which play a part in explaining the vision and future of the metaverse

. While the notion of decentralization has yet to establish a necessary stronghold in our lives today, it doesn’t mean we should put off learning about this till then. There is immediate, real-world value in adopting blockchain today: it’s just a matter of how ethical you want to be in, 

for example, managing your finances without institutional intermediaries playing a part in the process

So, how does MetaPals come into all this? As virtual pets, they’re inspired by their predecessors, but mainly Tamagotchi and Neopets, as these were the games our cofounders Max and Daryl grew up with. Built first as a browser extension, these furry friends live in our web browser screens, and work across any website so long as it’s a Chromium-based browser. With a growing sense of loneliness today especially in the online space, we designed MetaPals to be emotional companions easily available to anyone with a PC. It can also be for a pet lover who can’t get enough of pets, or who’d love to have a pet but for some reason can’t own one. Simply put, we’re replicating the experience of pet ownership in the virtual world, and with an especial focus on the web3 space.

Bridging the gap between the web2 and web3 space

One interesting insight we found during our research is that people who are interested in learning about the blockchain space also have a strongly correlated interest in virtual pets. Introducing emotional companionship in to the metaverse will thus help users transition from the web2 to web3 space, wherein their MetaPal is not just a furry virtual companion to cheer them up, but also a guide to all things related to the metaverse. Players will start off taking care of a MetaPal as they would do any other virtual pet, tending to 3 main needs: Hunger, Energy, and Happiness. Eventually, when we introduce the educational features and elements, players will start to get prompts and tips related to blockchain and cryptocurrency subjects; for example, that feeding or playing with your MetaPal is actually equivalent to the act of staking!

 buzzwords of this business generation. They’re used so frequently across an organization’s touchpoints — pitch decks, press releases, social media, and more — that it often becomes difficult to tell what the organization is exactly referring to. Most people end up feeling like this:

In the spirit of clarifying these terms, we’ve put together this simple 101 guide to define them all.

Cryptocurrencies are digital currencies on the blockchain (discussed in the next section). It would be nearly impossible to explain cryptocurrencies without discussing the first and most known: Bitcoin. Famously created by mysterious inventor Satoshi Nakamoto in 2008, Bitcoin has taken the world by storm since its inception, now boasting well over

Bitcoin and the thousands of other cryptocurrencies that soon followed in its wake received a lot of hype. Some argued that these digital currencies would spell the end of banks, which became a symbol of financial inequality and corruption since the Occupy Wall Street movement, and even other intermediaries, such as wire transfer services like Western Union that charged high fees to overseas foreign workers remitting money to their families back home.

Despite all the hype, cryptocurrencies still have a long way to go in terms of global adoption. Their most common use case was and still is investment, owing to their wild up-and-down prices. Apart from a few crypto faithful, very few people use cryptocurrency for day-to-day transactions for a variety of reasons, which you can read more about 

. Long story short, fiat isn’t going anywhere for a while.

Blockchain is a digital ledger that publicly records transactions. In the case of cryptocurrency, the blockchain may record the history of financial transactions between all users. Because the blockchain is immutable, people can trust its record-keeping, even though it is not backed or controlled by any central authority.

While cryptocurrency still has to make major headway, blockchain has arguably made much more traction in other industries. Because blockchain can provide record-keeping for any kind of transaction — and not just financial ones — it can be incorporated in a wide variety of use cases, including everything from retail and logistics to healthcare. Even voting has been upended by blockchain, with countries like 

Japan, the United States, Sierra Leone, and South Korea enabling constituents to cast votes on the digital ledger

. It is this type of secondary use case, rather than the cryptocurrency one from which it first emerged, where blockchain is making greater inroads.

What is the metaverse? The definition of a metaverse has varied between two slight variations. Some brands refer to a metaverse as the digital universe of their own making, which users can access through augmented reality (AR) or virtual reality (VR). Facebook, for instance, bought AR-headset maker Oculus Rift as part of its bid to become the primary gateway to the metaverse. The company made this goal an overt mission rather than just another moonshot when it 

publicly changed its name to Meta in 2021

Others may also use the term ‘metaverse’ to refer to a network of metaverses. No matter the definition, the metaverse has been plagued with problems. At Meta, Mark Zuckerberg laid off 11% of the organization’s workforce to continue building his metaverse, even though 

his own employees are apathetic about the initiative

. Perhaps more shocking is the fact that Decentraland, which has achieved illustrious unicorn status with a 

US$1.2 billion valuation, has only 30 active users

. You read that correctly: That’s 30, not 30,000.

While entrepreneurs and technologists are meant to push users forward to technologies people may not even know they initially want, it seems they have largely over-estimated the demand for people to participate in the metaverse, at least in its current incarnation.

Before we define what ‘web3’ means, let’s start with the root of it all and work our way forward.

Web1 refers to the earliest stage of the web, when webpages were primarily used to display information and were not interactive. This was characterized by a lack of connectivity and the inability of users to easily share or interact with content.

Web2, also known as the “dynamic web,” refers to the second stage of the web, which began in the late 1990s and is characterized by increased interactivity and user-generated content. Web2 technologies, such as blogs, wikis, and social media platforms, enabled users to easily share and interact with content, leading to a more participatory and collaborative online experience.

Web3, also known as the “semantic web,” refers to the third stage of the web, which as we know is still in development. The goal of Web3 is to create a more intelligent and interconnected web, where machines and software can easily understand and process data in order to provide more relevant and personalized experiences for users. Web3 technologies, such as artificial intelligence, machine learning, and blockchain, are expected to play a key role in this evolution of the web.

The “web3” meaning can thus be viewed as a contrast to web 2.0, which runs primarily on social media and a handful of tech companies that dominated the space. When discussing web3, most people are collectively referring to the technologies that may change the current incarnation of the internet, including cryptocurrency, blockchain, and the metaverse. These innovations are as much philosophically as they are technologically related: Most of these are viewed as advancing decentralization by lessening the concentration of power in companies like Google and Apple.

As much as web3 has been hailed as the future, the industry is still very much in its infancy. Part of the problem is that most of the companies are so forward-thinking that they request radical change of users that they are currently not ready to make. This is a problem we’re addressing at

. Simply put, the fundamental concept is that you’re caring for a browser pet on any website page so long as you’re using a PC. As we develop it in the next months, these interactions will also prepare users for the future: by attending to their online virtual pets, people will also learn about and experience first-hand what the metaverse is like, including adjacent technologies like cryptocurrency and blockchain, which will drive the growth of web3. Sounds far-fetched? Well, look no further than the Tamagotchi, which arguably kickstarted the idea of an always-on, electronic device ten years before the first smartphone — and we all know how that went.

Behind the buzz: Cryptocurrency, blockchain, web3, and metaverse defined simply

When play-to-earn (P2E) gaming first emerged in 2021, the idea seemed almost too good to be true: gamers could earn money from playing video games. The concept was a reversal of everything we were told as children by our parents. Now, games were no longer a waste of time, nor a hobby that led nowhere productive.

In the web3 space, the play-to-earn model refers to a type of online game or application that allows users can earn cryptocurrency or other digital assets by participating in the game or using the application. These assets can often be traded or sold on online marketplaces, giving users the opportunity to earn a return on their time and effort spent playing or using the application.

To understand how this works, let’s take a step back to understand a little bit about cryptocurrency and the web3 ecosystem. Cryptocurrency is a digital asset that uses cryptography for security and is decentralized, meaning it is not controlled by any single entity like a bank or government. The web3 ecosystem refers to the decentralized web, which is built on blockchain technology and enables the creation of decentralized applications (dApps) that can interact with decentralized networks.

In a P2E game or application, users can earn cryptocurrency or other digital assets by completing tasks or achieving certain goals, thus potentially generating a return on their time and effort spent doing so.. These assets may have real-world value and can be traded or sold on online marketplaces. For example, a user might earn a certain number of tokens by completing levels in a game, and then be able to trade or sell those tokens for other cryptocurrencies or even fiat currency, like US dollars.

The income generated from P2E games was novel for most players in the world, but especially significant for gamers in emerging markets, where the money had considerably greater value. For example, one person in the Philippines was previously 

 as a food stall vendor, and was lured by the promise of making more than 5 times his monthly salary playing 

, the game that first set off the P2E craze. As many were reportedly bringing in that amount of money at the time, he quit his job and began playing 

 around the clock. Unfortunately, close to a year and a half later, he was down thousands of dollars.

This gamer was not alone in his demise. Hundreds of thousands of gamers have been forward-thinking enough to adopt P2E gaming as a full- or part-time income, but have been let down by the model as it gained more traction over the years. Because P2E was and is not yet sustainable as a business model, the gamers who relied on it for income had unknowingly strapped themselves into a financial rollercoaster. Expecting the dizzying highs to continue, most only got out as the returns plummeted. Some, like the food stall vendor, only escaped when hitting close to rock bottom.

Such is the plight of these early adopters, as we saw even in the earliest days of the internet: while the tech startups founded in the dot-com era offered consumers enormous value, not all were not sustainable for a common set of reasons. The same is true of P2E: there are universal issues that cut across all the games, as is evident in these problems.

Many have unfavorably compared P2E games to multi-level marketing, and this comparison is not without merit. In Axie’s execution of P2E at least, gamers could realistically only make money if 

significantly more players joined after them

, much like a MLM scheme. These new gamers would either serve as the player’s ‘scholars’ — arguably similar in function to how downstream sales work in an MLM — where they generally hype up and boost the value of the tokens through their gaming.

This reliance on a steady stream of new users is inherently unsustainable: as the number of players who want to earn from P2E is not infinite, this pyramid is bound to collapse eventually.

Problem 2: The emphasis on earn versus play

Critics have argued that the category name of “play-to-earn” is misleading, as people assume that generating income from P2E is simple and straightforward. As an alternative, these critics argue that ‘play-and-earn’ would be a more fitting name, which implies that income is merely a byproduct and not the main goal of these games.

A more salient criticism of P2E is that the gameplay itself over-emphasizes

. In other words, most P2E are simply not fun. Take the example of 

, which has players competing in player-versus-player races to win tokens. Even with the colorful, web3-style branding — players race as winged horses — the racing mechanics cannot compare to even the worst racing game on a console. Stripped of fun gameplay, players are left ‘grinding’ tokens, a tedious activity that many reasonable people would argue is far worse than any job, and harmful to one’s mental health to boot.

One of the great ironies of P2E gaming is that most titles are not free. The same business adage applies here: To make money, you need money. For P2E gaming, this means that players need to invest in tokens or some other digital asset in order to begin playing, so that they can in turn earn more of the same currency.

Many such tokens are prohibitively expensive. At its peak, an Axie could sell for 

 as an example. So while P2E was lauded as a way for the working poor to earn much more money, the infrastructure of the category in reality made this highly unlikely. To get involved in P2E, many impoverished players had to work as ‘scholars’, dividing their earnings with the owner who financed the purchase of the character. In other words, P2E did not allow them to take control of their own financial destiny — they again became poor workers, this time in a colorful gaming universe. The situation was so oppressive that some described 

P2E as another form of digital colonialism

For these reasons, the player base for enthusiasm has dwindled today, exacerbated by the broader economic downturn in cryptocurrency. The situation is not all lost, however; just because these early P2E innovators have struggled does not mean the model is moot. There are several new entrants trying to revitalize the genre by addressing its fundamental issues — making games more accessible and democratic, enhancing their playability to the point they are actually good for a person’s well-being, and even increasing sustainability through real world value.

Redefining the P2E landscape and business model

While most in tech celebrate being first to market, 

 has a decided advantage in entering the web3 gaming world for various reasons: the most important proposition of all being that it 

. For one, in nearly all P2E games, there is no inherent value to the core gameplay. Slaying monsters in 

, for example, does not produce any kind of real world utility apart from the in-game tokens, which as we’ve seen, vary highly in value depending on the whims of the market.

MetaPals, on the other hand, offers real world value to both players and enterprises in the form of emotional companionship through caring for virtual pets. Inspired by the highly successful 

 first released in November 1996, the team wanted to reintroduce this concept of husbandry to the existing and a new generation of gamers, who can now own a virtual pet entirely in their browser. This sense of companionship that we all naturally crave and need as social creatures naturally leads to improved happiness, thus providing a second and equally important benefit to players: improved mental health. Now, who can say that of felling monsters? (Also, it’s fun taking care of these virtual furbabies!)

The MetaPals team also smartly ties this value proposition to a positive feedback loop using the game’s proprietary Proof-of-Care model, wherein users are incentivized to care of their virtual pet by to earn in-game currency that allows them to purchase necessities like food or snacks. These actions include a range from feeding and cleaning to playing minigames or accessorizing their MetaPals. Viewed another way, 

 rewards players who deepen their bond with their virtual pet and improve their well-being from it. This impact on wellness, needless to say, is valuable in an era where more and more consumers are searching high and low for solutions that advance their happiness and well-being online.

Later stages of development will also introduce an educational element to 

, where players’ virtual pets will eventually become their loyal guides to all things blockchain and web3 while still ingame. Because 

 brings people to experience a life that is “half reality, half meta,” the game is both an entrypoint and bridge into the metaverse, which for all its hype, has lacked a killer use case to draw people en masse into its digital worlds. The virtual pets of 

 can serve this function, leading players into the metaverse by the leash. To this end, there is a strong incentive for developers, enterprises, 

 the mass market to enter the web3 space through playing

Reimagining P2E: The Evolution of Sustainability in Play-to-Earn

My dear Wawa,
Before you arrived, I used to buy every Sims: Pets expansion pack and adopt as many cats and dogs as the game allowed without glitching. The process was always the same: I got excited from purchasing a pet game that would grant me the joy and delight of being a pet owner, but that would quickly dissipate in a matter of hours once I realised there was only so much you can do. Other alternate pet-like experiences like Pet Society and Tamagotchi had their own limitations; the virtual pets themselves never really grew or developed past what the mechanics allowed. So even though I tried to live the life of a pet owner through these games, I knew it would never come close to the real experience.

You’re sleeping right beside Papa as I’m writing this: your little body hugged close to his leg, your limbs in a relaxed stretch. It’s times like these that I’d look at you fondly and think of how you’ve greyed over the 10 years since you came into our lives; while still a spritely, active doggo, we can’t help but see your decline as your face became whiter and your eyes a milky grey in the past year. We have to use bouncy balls that land with a thud now whenever we play fetch, lest you’d dart off in the wrong direction thinking we’d thrown it there out of habit. It used to be cute, but it slowly dawned on us what it meant.

You first came into our lives when you were 2 years old — scared, skittish, and wary of everyone except my dad. I gotta confess, I didn’t like you because, well, I didn’t like Chihuahuas. As we were left alone during my summer break, however, your quirks grew on me with every walk and feeding. It helped that you loved playing fetch, and I adore pups that play as enthusiastically and tirelessly as you do.


I miss the days where my sister and I could hug and kiss you as we want, and you’d have this terrified look that you couldn’t help. We egged you on in your playful tendencies that edged ever so slightly on aggression; laughed amidst poorly-mimicked growls thinking we were only communicating with you. There were even times where we instigated your ‘fight mode’, just to show our friends how crazy you were.

…and the responsibilities that come with it

Then one day, you attacked my sister with no warning growl. It was a deep bite for canines as small as yours, enough to mark the beginning of your reign. We didn’t have the heart to hit you or scold you, what with the puppy dog eyes you’d so masterfully pull. We forgave you, again and again, until you had us in the beans of your paw. This is where we failed you, and no number of what-ifs and amount of chiding can erase my guilt in having a hand. I told myself that I’d treat my next dog differently, so I could give it the life and fullest amount of love it deserves. But that’s not to be…because I’m allergic to the very animal I love.


It’s too late in any way to help you unlearn the bad training, and for me to disregard the pain and inconvenience myallergy brings. Regardless, you’ll always be my first dog. If I could somehow give you a second, better life I would in a heartbeat, so you’d have all the love and affection you rightly deserve. I think many of us would like to have that second chance. Any other pet that may come after would be uniquely themselves in different ways, but never be you. There’s a profound sadness about that, like how a lover lost would never be found in another again.

What About Virtual Pets…In The Metaverse?


That said, I recently found a way I could relive you in the metaverse, perhaps even hone a similar personality from before you were mistrained. Even better, the team gave me an opportunity to be part of the development process: to contribute what I know about games as well as pet (dog) behaviours to help create as realistic and emotionally rewarding a game can be.

Of course, this inevitably brought to question whether another pet game would be able to live up to expectations, but I’m personally heartened by their passion and determination to replicate or even reimagine the concept of pet companionship in the virtual world. It will benefit so many of us who’d love to have pets but can’t for a variety of reasons, at the same time provide an avenue for anyone interested to explore the metaverse while forming genuine emotional connections with pets and humans alike. Perhaps this might be a form of respite for the ones who grieve(d) for a beloved animal that’s passed on too. I know I’ll need it when you go.

Wawa. It’s such a silly name that I often chuckle nervously before telling my friends when they coo over your pics and vids. Yet, we always call for you with a soft voice, laced with tenderness and affection. You’re one of the feisty, naughty ones, yes, but you’re still our beloved doggo who’s blessed us with boundless joy, laughter, and spirit. I hope I can recreate the same experience you gave us in the virtual world, while still giving you the best of all of us in your remaining years.
